1980 Mazda Rx7 engine rebuild & video

1980 Rx7 engine rebuildWe have seen a strong resurgence of the first generation of the rx7 lately, why?

This car was the one that set the world on notice for the rotary engine back in 1978. Yes, the Rx2's and 3's (and the Cosmo / R100 too), I have had most of them and they were fun to drive back in the day.

The SA, put the engine in the right place, wonderful sportscar styling and handling, and with the light weight, small tires, these were a blast to hang the tail out and rip all the way to redline over and over again.

It is that analog feeling, no car today can replicate that. Yes, it has numb steering, you can feel everything and it isn't anywhere as fast as today's cars, but drive one for awhile and you'll know what I mean, it just feels good behind the wheel.

Rx7 Engine rebuild street portFast forward to the last month or so, we just finished up a good build on a 12A with Racing Beat exhaust and lightweight flywheel, this last week we were tuning it as we opened up the ports a bit, used newly shaved down 13B GSL-SE rotor housings (the exhaust ports are much bigger), and hit the road.

Right now, we have larger primary jets in it for break-in and it is ready for its owner to put the 500 miles on it for the new bearings and fresh seals, springs, etc.

This is a classic, and for those who understand it and want to experience it, why not?
