Rotary Engine Builds | Oil Pump and why

Rotary Engine UpgradesWe enjoy constructing rotary engines and take great pride in ensuring every detail is meticulously handled..

On our motor builds, one thing that makes a difference is oiling system upgrades.

On our latest build; a 13B six port S5 motor that will have a supercharger.
Yes, most people follow convention by adding a turbocharger, there are pros and cons to each. For this motor, we add one very important performance / longevity upgrade that makes a difference. A larger oil pump.

Remember, these motors are volume (not pressure) for cooling purposes. The rotary engine uses oil to cool the center / insides of the rotors. A lot of oil moves through this system every minute. This motor is going to see serious rpm's as it is going into a drift car. Fortunately for us, Mazda made this upgrade easy. Add in the oil pump from the turbo motors, it bolts right up.

On rebuilds, it is important to take the time to remove the oil pump, inspect / measure tolerances & wear. For most of our builds, we replace the oil pump and chain as one is worn and the other has stretched. What makes the chain stretch? This chain does a lot of work, add in high temperatures / demands, metal has its limits.

IMG_3300Here in Colorado, altitude and heat is a lot different than other parts of the USA & world. Adding power means adding heat, make sure to develop an action plan for the whole car, not just the engine. As I tell every engine build owner, I want to only see the inside of your engine one time, we are going to do it right the first time. On this engine, full race sized intake and exhaust are necessary, this one is going to rip.

When putting together the oil pump, it is critical to pre-lube it and to make sure that the keyway for the drive sprocket is firmly in place. We add in bright yellow to the keyway so that is it visible after you assemble it. Put it together wrong, the keyway slides out and the oil pump quits working very quickly. That mistake gets expensive real fast.
